Protect our cranes

December 10, 2012 06:15 pm | Updated 06:15 pm IST

A certain species of crane comes to Karaikal at this time of the year. The local name for these cranes is Madaiyan. These birds come here for water and stay in the backwaters of the beach. They are guests of Karaikal and it is our duty to protect our guests. However, some people do not believe in this and instead eat the birds to fill their stomach. If this continues, these cranes will become extinct. We have to create an awareness on conservation. Students can conduct rallies and seminars. The government also must take action so that this illegal activity can be stopped.
