Fancy pens and pencils promise to “improve' our handwriting.” But it isn't that simple to acquire good handwriting. Handwriting is a skill that comes naturally to some and for others they must practise to make it look legible and graceful.

Be neat

Good handwriting makes your work look neat and presentable, especially on the answer sheet. Gracie Rajan, an English teacher at St. Andrew's School, points out the importance of handwriting from the examination point of view. “Presentation is the most important aspect of the answer paper. This includes clarity in writing, followed by technical factors like word spacing and sentence spacing while writing your answers on the answer sheet”.

Legible and clear handwriting makes it simpler for the examiner to correct your answer sheet. There are many techniques which one can follow to improve handwriting. Poonam Guntewar, a calligraphy instructor says, “It is important to know how to place the book, hold a pen or pencil before beginning to write.

The heights and depths of the letters are also important.

When a child writes on double ruled sheets, they don't face any trouble. But when they shift to single ruled pages they have difficulty regarding the length of alphabets and spacing."

The body posture while writing matters too. It helps to sit straight and write rather than slouching and writing.

One can practise handwriting by writing in cursive writing books. Do not hold your pen/pencil too tightly.
