The assortment of wild animals, imaginary birds and dangerous fishes in his painting brought a smile in H. Aadithyan's face, as he explained the setting for his piece of work. His adaptation of the theme, ‘A Picnic with Family,' was definitely successful in leaving the viewer with an amused smile, as they pondered over how a lion, a cheetah, humans and an aeroplane could all peacefully co-exist in such close proximity without things going awry.

“This is my father, this is my mother and this is me with my dog, Figo,” he said, pointing at a group, huddled together on one side of the painting. What looked like a few paces away, a cheetah was trying to attack a group of people in a jeep. “They are fully safe inside the jeep,” he said confidently. This student of Vikasa School, Madurai, was the all-India second prize winner of the junior category of The Hindu Young World Painting Competition 2011.

For his interesting and very contemporary version of ‘Enjoying an ice-cream with friends,' Chennai student K. Ragha Sudhan of Chinmaya Vidyalaya was the all-India first-prize winner in the junior category. “I read a lot of books. For this picture, I got the idea from the Faraway series of books,” he said.

First-prize winner in the senior category A.J.S. Lakshmishree said she imagined how her family looked while watching a cricket match before beginning to sketch out her painting. “I thought about the expressions everyone have while watching an exciting match, and how some people are not interested in following the game and prefer to read a book instead,” said this student of Bethesda High School, Bangalore.

For her painting of a group of friends enjoying the rain, the second prize was awarded to U. Hema Sri Bhavya, a student of St. Ann's School in Visakhapatnam.

At the prize distribution ceremony at the Lalit Kala Akademi here on Friday, Chairman of MIOT Hospitals Mallika Mohandas gave away a certificate and cash award each of Rs.15,000 to the first prize winners and Rs.10,000 to the second prize winners. “Everybody felt the talent was amazing,” she said, congratulating all the participants of the event. “There is a great deal of imagination, energy and thinking which is exhibited in the paintings,” she noted.
