A chilly Sunday morning witnessed a play of colours at the St. Joseph's Indian High School Auditorium here, as participants at the finals of The Hindu Young World on-the-spot painting competition 2011 played with various hues and created bright works with their imagination.
Topics
The participants were divided into two categories — juniors (classes 4 to 7) and seniors (classes 8 to 10).

The juniors were given the topics picnic with family, ice-cream with friends, visit to a museum or botanical garden or fun at the playground. Seniors drew about enjoying the rain with friends, bicycle ride with friends, watching a cricket/tennis match on television with family/friends, or a science exhibition.
Tough for judges
Judges V.R.C. Shekar and Muni Mohan, senior faculty, College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, had a tough time zeroing in on winners. “We looked into all aspects such as composition, approach to the topic, extraordinary techniques, expression and media used by the participants to choose the best paintings,” said Mr. Shekar.

Winners
In the junior category, Apeksha Pai, student of Vidyaniketan Public School, won the first prize.
“I am very, very happy. I chose the topic ‘having fun at the playground' and imagined myself skipping with my friends. This is the first time I am winning a prize at this event. I will call up all my friends and relatives and inform them,” said the Class 6 student. She received a cash prize of Rs. 3,000.
In the senior category, Lakshmishree A.J.S., student of Bethesda High School, won the first prize.
“I expected to get second or third prize. When they announced my name, I was pleasantly surprised. The first 10 minutes, I spent on choosing the topic. I chose ‘watching a cricket match with family'. Though I am in Class 10, from the beginning, I have been focussing on both academics as well as extracurricular activities. Painting and drawing soothes my mind and it is a stress-buster. They help me do well in academics too,” said Lakshmishree, who has won several prizes in painting competitions. She received a cash prize of Rs. 5,000.
G. Naveen Kumar and Mohammed A., both students of Bishop Cotton Boys' School, won second and third prizes respectively in the junior category. They received cash prize of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000.
Among the seniors, Rakesh K.R., student of Sandeepani English High School, and Akhil A. Patil, student of Bishop Cotton Boys' School, won the second and third prizes respectively. They were given a cash prize of Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000.
All the winners received certificates from The Hindu .
‘Encourage them'
Artist M.S. Murthy gave away the prizes to the winners.
He urged parents to encourage their children to take up fine arts. “Allow them to participate in various competitions and they will get exposure and experience. Preserve their work and analyse them later. Their work will have a lot of messages for society,” he said.
The participants were from schools in and around Bangalore. Babu Vijay, Regional General Manager (Circulation), The Hindu , Bangalore, and N. Rajashekar, Regional General Manager (Administration), The Hindu , Bangalore, were present.
Grand prize on offer
The event, an integral part of The Hindu NIE initiative, was presented by MIOT Hospitals (Chime), while Amrutanjan Relief Cough & Cold was the national sponsor.
The three best paintings will be selected and engraved on the cover or lid of Amrutanjan products.

Consolation prize winners received cash prizes of Rs. 500 each and certificates from The Hindu .
