Mission: Save Earth

Post Ganesh Chaturthi, the environment-conscious Hyderabadis were a worried lot. Polluting one of the city’s most famous tourist attractions and home to the Buddha statue, the Hussainsagar lake, was again going to be the venue for immersion for the plaster of paris Ganesha idols.

In clay

While there are many who wait for the government to find a solution, there are others like the Jain International School which have already started work.

Their principal, Lakshmi Rao, proposed an idea to her students and they had a weeklong fun adventure of making clay Ganeshas, “Year after year plaster of Paris (POP) Ganeshas are submerged in Hussainsagar.”

Thus taking up the cause, 185 students from LKG to Std. IX learnt to make clay idols and painted them with natural colours. They then distributed 200 of them to parents and staff and the rest to the Hyderabadis who came to IMAX. They had set up a stall outside Prasad’s Imax and distributed 250 idols in 35 minutes flat. They held rallies and carried banners aying ‘Save Hussainsagar, save environment, save Earth, be eco-friendly and be ideal with clay idol’.

Every year there are those who crib about pollution and there are the others who take the task on. It isn’t just the government’s job to make and implement rules.

At times as citizens of such a diverse country and beings of this nature we need to realize our duties and unite to save it.

Young or old, irrespective of faith, caste, creed and culture we need to make our choices that are best for survival.

So, let us all join in this endeavour of eco-friendly Ganeshas and act wisely in the present for a better future.
