My team was one among the two in my level that got selected to represent India at the World Robotic Olympiad 2012 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was an enriching experience filled with fun, extensive preparation, hard work and determination. Among the stiff competition from across the countries, we had to prove our mettle. This year’s theme was “Robots Connecting People”. We built a robot that would revive some of our cultural aspects that are fast diminishing and bring it back to life. So we created a robot that brought to life the Poikaal Kuthirai dance. The robot replicates the Poikaal Kuthirai performance. We had used Lego NXT to build this robot and to enhance the festive look we also created robots that do “Rope Walking” and the “Drummer Robot”.
It was an amazing experience for me and I got an opportunity to meet and connect with teams from across the world. Close to 250 teams from 37 countries had participated and every team had brought to life a concept relevant to the needs of their country and nation. There was Nanny Robot and a robot that protects kids from getting bullied. In the senior levels there were robots that played games like soccer with us. It was a proud moment for me to represent India in such an august forum and when people showed interest to know about our creation and enjoyed our robots performance we were thrilled. Team India had lot of interesting creations too like “Mr Clean – Drainage Cleaner Robot”, “Arjuna – Archer Robot” and much more.
