The Hindu- Young World painting competition saw as many as 600 children from across Karnataka take part this year.

When Harshitha V. V. of Kannur, Kerala, bagged the first prize in the senior category of The Hindu- Young World painting competition recently, it was for the fourth consecutive time. She said that she could do it due to her confidence. Harshita has been the frontrunner without having ever attended any painting or drawing class. “I am happy,'' she said.

Self- taught

A Std. X student of Nithyananda Bhavan English Medium High School in Kannur, Kerala, Harshitha said that she has been winning prizes in drawing and painting competitions since she was in Std. III. So far she has won 70 gold medals and 700 trophies, she said.

Her father, Haridas, said that Harshitha had won three national awards for painting which included awards from Cultural Centre for Research Training, Union Ministry of Earth Sciences and Students of Colour India.

Vaibhav Shenoy of Canara High School, Dongarakeri, Mangalore, bagged the first prize in the junior category. Y. C. Mishra, Principal General Manager, Dakshina Kannada Telecom District, gave away prizes to winners. The topic for juniors was ‘Birthday party', and for seniors, it was ‘An evening in the park'.

Megha G Shetty of Viveka English medium school, Kota, Udupi district, and Anupama K. K. of Azhikode High School, Azhikode, Kannur district, Kerala, bagged the second and third prizes, respectively, in the senior category.

Manishma Manoj of Infant Jesus Joyland School, Bolar, Mangalore and Shubham R Varnekar of St. Aloysius Higher Secondary School, Kodialbail, Mangalore won the second and third prizes, respectively, in the junior category. Consolation prizes in senior category were awarded to Swetha Sasikumar, Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Kakkad, Kannur, Kerala; Neha B, Canara High School, Urwa, Mangalore; Sowpika U. R., Vidyodaya Public School, Udupi; Shabari Y Ganiga, Besant English School, Mangalore; Anagha K, Canara High School, Urwa, Mangalore; U. Mangala Nayak, Canara High School, Dongarakeri; and Suprabha K, Canara High School, Urwa.

Those who won consolation prizes in junior category are Varun Holla, Canara High School, Dongarakeri; Vasudha Kumblekar, Besant English school, Kodialbail; Manmitha V. K., Vishwamangala Higher Primary School, Konaje, Mangalore; K. N. Bharath Rao, Sharada Vidyalaya, Mangalore; Akshatha. R., St. Cycily's English School, Udupi; Aathira G Menon, St. Thomas English School, Moodbidri; and Kedar Janardhana Prabhu, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara English Medium School, Ujire, Dakshina Kannada.
