SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME using techniques likedecoupage, accent walls, and DIY ideas

The New Year is the perfect time for new beginnings. Yes, you want a brand new look for your home, but do you really want to cash out all your savings on it? Here are a few pocket-friendly tips to revamp your home:

Begin right

Show some love to your entry way to create a great first impression. Try a fancy door knocker or stencil (or glue) the apartment number on the front door. And who said a door has to be brown? A cheery red or a warm gold will set your apartment apart from the rest. Put out a fresh new doormat and place a bowl of mints/candies around. For a touch of instant glam, run a string of lights around the door.

Redo the room

Moving the furniture around can help create a new look at zero cost. If the room already has a focal point, try and find a new one. Shift furniture from one room to the other till you find a brand new fit.

Update furniture

That old sofa will look sparkling new with new upholstery. If you don’t want to reupholster, consider new slipcovers. Give the dining table chairs a new lease of life with a fresh coat of paint. Different colours create an unusual mood.

Repurpose and reinvent

Breathe new life into old wood furniture by giving it a touch of paint. DIY enthusiasts can try their hand at decoupage — simple paper patterns stuck on with Modge Podge (glue) create a one-of-a-kind piece. The collection of bottles can be turned into a set of hanging planters. A local tailor can fashion old saris and bits of brocade into vibrant cushion covers; unused dupattas can be converted into pillow cases.

Add an accent

An accent wall is a wonderful way to create a focal point in a room. Paint it a bright colour or put up eye-catching wallpaper.

Or else, buy a huge stencil and slap on some acrylic paint to create a patterned wall.

Light it right

A new lighting fixture can take a room from drab to fab. Instead of going to a showroom, hit a local antique market to source an old fixture that can be refurbished. DIY fans can embellish old lampshades with ribbons, fancy trim, sequins and stones.

Revive the bathroom

Increase the appeal of a tired bathroom. A new shower curtain, an unusual mirror and fresh towels create an inviting look. Bring out your shells and candles, and arrange them artistically on shelves and ledges to recreate a home spa.

Host a décor swap

Pot lucks are passé. Invite like-minded friends over with décor pieces they’re looking to exchange. Lamps, artwork, mirrors, silk flowers, vases and candle stands — they may be old for you but your friend may have been eyeing them for long. Swap and get a new décor element without spending a penny!
