Handsome Krishna

December 29, 2010 09:20 pm | Updated 09:20 pm IST - CHENNAI:

There are some who are acknowledged as good looking by many. Others are acknowledged as good looking by a few. But no one is acknowledged universally as being handsome, except Lord Krishna. He is described as Bhuvana Sundara, the most handsome One in the whole universe, said Adur Asuri Madhavachari in a discourse.

In Gokula, Krishna would graze the cows during the day, but when he returned in the evening, even though His face would be covered with dust, His beauty would in no way be diminished. When sending Him out with the cows, Yasoda would plait His hair in many different ways, each day a different style. But the plaits would loosen up in the course of the day; when Krishna returned with the cows in the evening, His dust-covered face would be framed by His lovely curls, still looking like a lotus that attracted bees.

When Krishna disappeared from amidst the dancing Gopikas to show them that He disliked their pride, the Gopikas recalled His beauty and wondered why He had hidden such a lovely face from them. When the Gopikas were finally reunited with Krishna, they were like someone who had been given up for dead, but had been resuscitated. When Krishna, who had temporarily disappeared, returned, they were overjoyed at seeing Him again. Krishna kept each happy with His darting looks of love and His words, so that each was happy thinking that she was special to the Lord.

The demon king Banasura had a daughter called Usha. In a dream one night, she saw a very handsome man and decided that she would marry no one else. She confided in her friend Chitralekha, an artist, who could paint lifelike portraits. As Usha described his features, Chitralekha sketched a portrait of the man. When Chitralekha completed the portrait, Usha confirmed that that was what the man had looked like. The handsome man turned out to be Krishna's grandson Aniruddha. This, perhaps, explained his good looks. After all, with a grandfather who was described as the most handsome One in the whole of the Universe, it was not surprising that the grandson should be good looking too!
