Vijay Yesudas says he is still in a daze on hearing the news that he has won the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Playback Singer (male) for his soulful numbers ‘Akaleyo nee’ in Grandmaster and ‘Mazhakondu mathram’ in Spirit . This is Vijay’s second state film award. The first one was for the duet ‘Kolakuzhal vili’ in the film Nivedyam, which was composed M. Jayachandran, who, incidentally, has won the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Music Composer for 2012. While Deepak Dev composed the songs of Grandmaster, the songs in Spirit were composed by Shahbaz Aman.

Vijay adds he never expected the award. “Not that I expect an award for any song of mine. I give each one my best and hope for the best. These things can’t be managed. It happens,” says an elated Vijay who has been quietly making a mark in his chosen field.

He says it goes to prove that good songs do not need any kind of marketing or promotion. “I was lucky to get such a combination of rich lyrics and good music that were used so prominently in the film. Both the songs in the movies were combined with certain important scenes in the film and I feel all these factors helped the songs to get noticed,” explains Vijay who turns composer this year with Sanjiv Sivan’s film

And what does his father, K.J. Yesudas, think about this award. “I have not spoken to him. But I will talk with Appa and Amma [Prabha Yesudas] today evening,” says Vijay.

He says he just wants to keep singing such songs and continue to practise to make every song reach the charts. The singer has also made a mark in Tamil with two songs he sang for Mani Ratnam’s Kadal , under the baton of A.R. Rahman. Sing on Vijay!
