Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) comes together with one of India’s greatest musicians, master Carnatic drummer Karaikudi R. Mani and his ensemble Sruthi Laya, to present Two Oceans. The Carnatic tradition is often described as a vast ocean of music. Through this collaboration, Sruthi Laya and AAO have traversed the space where two oceans meet.
The concert explores the rhythmic intricacies and improvising practices at the core of both ensembles. Rich in power, beauty and originality, the show represents a new direction built on the deep foundations of Carnatic music and Western jazz traditions.
Two Oceans is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia International Cultural Council, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. AAO is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and the Robert Salzer Foundation. The performance comes here as part of Oz Fest, a four-month long festival that brings Australian culture to 18 Indian cities.

One of the primary aims of AAO is to create situations that allow for a free and open exchange of musical and dramatic ideas between different cultures and traditions. AAO has been collaborating with Karaikudi Mani, among the greatest exponents of Carnatic music, since 1996. Their joint work Into the Fire has been performed across India, Europe, Australia and Asia, impressing audiences with its intoxicating blend of music, percussion and dance.
