B.Vijayagopal presented an enchanting flute concert under the auspices of the Tiruchi Kendra of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at the Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidyalaya in the city recently.
Vijayagopal commenced his concert with a different patantaram of a varnam in Nattai ragam, Aadi talam. The swaras in this composition swayed in different octaves and brought out the beauty of the raga in all the three speeds.

The next composition was Neelakanta Sivan’s ‘Sambo Mahadeva’ in Bowli ragam, Rupaka talam. He briefed this raga with a short alapana and also rendered kalpanaswaras for this. Next was ‘Birana Nannu Brova’ in Kalyani Aadi talam. He elaborated the raga with various sancharas with intricate janta swara prayogas. He also did some ‘graha bedas’ to make the raga shine on its own. This was followed by a beautiful delineation of the raga by the violinist through third kala sancharas. The next composition was Papanasam Sivan’s ‘Sri Valli Deva Senapathe’ in Natabhairavi set to Aadi talam followed by . Oothukadu Venkata Subbier’s ‘Kuzhaludhi Manamellam’ in Khambodi, Aadi talam. The madhyamakala sahityas sounded divine in flute. Then Vijayagopal rendered Bharatiar’s ‘Theeratha Vilaiyattu Pillai’ in ragamalika. He concluded his concert with a tillana.
The flautist was ably accompanied by Mannargudi A. Eswaran on the mridangam, Mysore V. Srikanth on the violin and Coimbatore V. Mohanram on the ghatam.
J.T. Chari, director-projects, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, welcomed the gathering and S. Sundararajan, head-administration, briefed about activities of Bhavan Tiruchi Kendra.
