To create an awareness on industrial waste management and environment, Industrial Waste Management Association (IWMA) and Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) jointly organised “Enviro 2012” for school students on Saturday and Sunday last.
More than 100 children from 54 schools across the city participated in the two-day event at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras.
Various activities such as drawing, painting, quiz and poster-making with captions were held.

“People should be educated about the environment. An effective mechanism to dispose industrial waste has to be developed without affecting the ecosystem,” said S. Mani, President (Environment and Safety), Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited and Chairman, IMWA.
He emphasised the need for sustainable effort to address the challenges of industrial waste management.
“Sustainability plays a crucial role in managing industrial waste. Reuse, reduce, recycle and reclaim will help minimise the risk posed by hazardous waste. The objective of the event is to bring out the creativity and skill of students,” Mr. Mani pointed out.

IWMA in association with Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) and Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has instituted the Young Environmental Scientist (YES) award for innovative concepts on projects relating to recycling, environment, waste management, and climate change, said K. Sivaraman, Treasurer, IWMA.
The objective of YES is to support the students in their endeavours. The Association has planned to organise more environment awareness programme for students every year, he added.
