Maths prize conferred on Oxford Professor

The SASTRA-Ramanujan Award 2014 was conferred on Professor James Maynard of Oxford University, here on Sunday. Professor Mangalam Srinivasan of Harvard University presented the award.

Prof. Maynard received a citation and cash award of $10,000 for his outstanding contribution to the field of prime number theory, especially his work on the small gaps problem. He solved the famous problem of Paul Erdos on large gaps between primes.

Prof. Maynard will deliver the Ramanujan birth anniversary commemorative lecture here on Monday.

Reading the citation, the award’s committee chair, Krishnaswami Alladi, explained how this prize was currently among the most sought-after awards for Mathematics in the world. SASTRA Vice-Chancellor R. Sethuraman awarded book grants to school students.
