Delhi University relented on Friday and announced that it would replace the controversial Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) with the old three-year programme that was in place till last year.
A committee of principals has been appointed to draw up modalities for admissions that have already been delayed by a week. No fresh admission schedule has been announced yet.
The rollback was announced by Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh himself after the University Grants Commission on Thursday night rejected Delhi University’s proposal to offer a “blended” three-year programme instead of the pre-2013 three-year course structure that has been in place for years. In a three-paragraph message posted on the university’s website, Prof. Singh announced the switch back to the old undergraduate course structure and explained that this was done in line with the UGC directive and in recognition of the “need of the hour’’ and “paramount importance” to protect the interests of students by ensuring the start of the admission process.

According to the UGC, FYUP not only failed to meet the NEP’s “binding structure” but also fell foul of the law as it was introduced without following statutory provisions of the Delhi University Act, 1922.
