Inauguration
“Thanks to the fast depletion of natural resources, it is inevitable to look beyond outer space for the survival of mankind. In the next 500 years, Mars, the ‘veg planet’ is going to be the earth’s colony,” said U.R. Rao, Chairman, PRL Governing Council, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on the occasion of the inaugural ceremony of the Student Satellite Training Programme (SSTP-2) held at the Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT), Bangalore. A consortium of undergraduate students drawn from seven engineering colleges under the leadership of NMIT is on the mission of designing India’s first twin NANO satellites, under a project called STUDSAT-2.
STUDSAT (Student Satellite) is supposedly the first pico-satellite launched by India. The design of STUDSAT was presented at the International Astronautical Conference – 2008, Glasgow. The paper was awarded the Hans Von Muldau (Best Student Team) Award.

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) joined hands with multinational Rapid Global Business Solutions Inc. (RGBSI) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that covers setting up of industry-institute partnership and centres of excellence, including in quality lifecycle management in all the affiliated colleges of VTU.
H. Maheshappa, Vice-Chancellor, VTU, said, “As the demand for skilled resources is rapidly growing, engineering colleges need to keep pace with the industry to create employment opportunities for students from the beginning itself. To achieve this, such collaborations between companies with academic institutions can go a long way in imparting the much needed skills and bringing practical industry experience to the classroom.”

Through this agreement, RGBSI will bring the practice of manufacturing quality lifecycle management (QLM) into the classroom through skill development, using trained and RGBSI certified industry faculty and RGBSI’s Empower QLM.
Principals of more than 200 engineering colleges across Karnataka attended the event.
Sharing expertise
Aesculap Academy, a B Braun Brand, organised a knee and hip arthroplasty cadaver workshop in association with the Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore. Eminent orthopaedic surgeons shared their expertise and skills in guiding and developing new surgeons.
Faculty development
S.S.R. College of Science and Management Studies organised a faculty development programme with a one-day workshop on ‘Research methodology in management and social science: a skill building approach.’ Members of the college were present.
Utopia
Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Bangalore, concluded ‘Utopia’, the annual international students cultural fest with participation from over 500 students from over 20 countries. With a theme ‘Heroes — unleash the unbelievable you!’, several events, including dance competitions, a fashion show and an international food festival were held.
