Residents of Ramakrishna Nagar, Chitlapakkam, have requested the authorities concerned to survey and remove encroachments on water channels that are linked to Selaiyur Lake, Chitlapakkam Lake and Sembakkam Lake.
The residents recently submitted a petition in this regard to the Deputy Tashildar, Tambaram Taluk Office and the Kancheepuram Collector, R. Gajalakshmi.
According to residents, “During the heavy rains in November and December last year, excess water from Selaiyur Lake entered Ramakrishna Nagar as encroachments on un-assessed lands adjacent to Chitlapakkam Kulakarai prevented the water from flowing through a channel meant for it. Similarly, the excess water from Chitlapakkam Lake could not flow through a water channel at Thirumurugan Nagar as it had been blocked due to encroachments.”
“At present, the Chitlapakkam Selection Grade Town Panchayat is constructing stormwater drains on the west side of our colony,” say residents. The excess water from the waterbodies should reach Sembakkam lake through Kamarajapuram.
“Water channels should be surveyed and encroachments removed to prevent stagnation,” say residents of Sharma Nagar and Abraham Lincoln Street.” The Tashildar of Tambaram taluk office has assured the residents to send a surveyor at the earliest to carry out this work.
