Last Sunday, 4th Cross Street in Ormes Road, Kilpauk came alive at 8.30 a.m. Children and adults dressed in green and white went all out to clean up the roads.

The initiative was taken by residents as part of the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’. They received support from the Corporation.

Planning for the event started over two weeks ago where residents met with the councillor and Corporation officials to help them obtain cleaning equipment and disposal bins.

The invitation to the residents read ‘A brand new year and a brand new Ormes Road. Sounds Good?’ . All children were asked to make A3 posters that would be put up to beautify the road.

Residents even pooled in money towards the printing of banners and posters to create awareness around the neighbourhood. There are more than 150 families residing on this street, which has a good mix of apartments and independent houses.

According to Sulakshana Badani, a resident, this effort is part of an ongoing programme and weekly checks are planned. “We also plan to have ‘Coffee on the Street’ every Saturday — the idea is to make our streets so spick and span that residents would sit down there and enjoy a cup of coffee,” she said.
