Not many want to get on board the Mullai Nagar bus terminus

The facility is spacious alright. But there is nothing there to draw commuters, says D. MADHAVAN

A small park in Mullai Nagar off M.K.B Nagar near Perambur is the most visited spot in the neighbourhood. More visited than even the bus terminus from which the park was carved.

Reason: the terminus does not have anything to draw commuters.

Located on Satyamurthy Nagar Main Road, the spacious terminus is heavily littered with garbage.

The cement roof of the bus operating yard is broken at many places and, when it rains, water can be seen leaking through the holes on the roof.

The pavement is completely damaged and filled with potholes and craters. As there are no storm water drains, the terminus gets flooded even after a small shower. Commuters find it difficult to wade through the slush inside the terminus to board the buses there. It does not have toilets. Nor does it have water taps for the staff and commuters. Poor illumination adds to the problems. The terminus is the lone bus facility for hundreds of residents of Mullai Colony, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board quarters, Golden Colony, M.G.R. Nagar, Vasantham Garden and M.K.B. Nagar. Most of the commuters are daily wage earners. “We have represented the issue at several grievance meetings organised by the civic body where other departments including MTC were present. Yet, there has been little improvement at the terminus,” said R. Sukumar, a resident of Mullai Nagar.Despite having adequate space to park a fleet of buses, the terminus is ignored because of its poor infrastructure. Commuters prefer to board buses from the nearby bus stops. The terminus is reported to have turned into a den for anti-socials. “There have been repeated pleas from residents to give a the terminus a facelift. Efforts would be taken to renovate the facility soon,” said sources from MTC.
