Motorcyclists have requested the State Highways Department to create a vehicular thoroughfare in the Alandur pedestrian subway.
At present, motorists coming from St. Thomas Mount and Keezhkatalai and proceeding towards Guindy and Porur have to take a u-turn near St. Thomas Garrison Church.
“As the Metro Rail work is going on opposite the subway, vehicles have to take a u-turn near the decade-old Chapel, a kilometre away. The subway can be re-designed on the lines of a vehicular subway for two-wheelers on Suddhananda Bharathi Road, East Tambaram, connecting East and West Tambaram. This also helps ease congestion on the main road during the rush hour,” motorists said.

“Travelling a kilometre for the u-turn is a waste of time and petrol. Vehicles can be allowed inside the subway to reduce the time of travel,” another motorist said.
Also, vehicle users have demanded installation of a traffic signal and creation of a vehicular passageway at the junction of Grand Southern Trunk Road and the Southern Sector of Inner Ring Road connecting Thillai Ganga Nagar Subway.
At present, the Eastern side of GST Road is cut off as Metro Rail work is going on under the tracks. The vehicles have to take a u-turn near St. Thomas Mount Police Junction Booth to reach the Eastern Side.
