“Indian football players lack in basic and effective tackling techniques,” said D. Sekaran, coach, Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala, and former Indian football player.

In an exclusive interview to Downtown , Mr. Sekaran said, “It is only through regular practice that one will learn the necessary techniques to play the game well. Basic skills such as passing, controlling, defence and kicks should be taught early. Teaching the aspirant at a young age is therefore mandatory.”

Skills can be mastered only by playing more matches. Players must be well-trained in basic techniques if they want to succeed and play at international level, he added.

The former ace footballer is now conducting a special coaching camp at a ground adjacent to Annal Ambedkar Mani Mandapam, Santhome High Road, MRC Nagar, for those in the age group of six to 16. The camp will be on till May 31 from 6.30 to 8 a.m. and from 4.30 to 6 p.m., except on Sundays.

Objective of the camp

“The objective of the camp is to teach the aspirants the fundamental training of the sport and develop their individual skills. Scientific methods to kick the ball, involve the body in a particular technique to receive the ball and pass it is the focus of the camp. Keeping a tab on the players' performance and faults is an integral part of a coach's job,” Mr. Sekaran added.

Of late, a lot of school students have started playing the sport. Earlier it was the choice of those hailing from middle-class, patronised especially by the residents of North Chennai. Now, many private schools and parents have started encouraging children to pursue the game, Mr. Sekaran pointed out.

Another important aspect is athletic fitness, which is an integral part of the game. Concentration, of course is vital.

“We will be conducting matches among the aspirants to watch their performance with the accent on spotting flaws and weaknesses,” informed Mr. Sekaran.

Physical activity

“Today, there is no physical activity for children. Playing a sport will make them active and disciplined, besides developing their mental skills. It will keep them agile and active the whole day. After the camp, regular practice sessions will be held on Saturdays and Sundays,” he added. Apart from football, a special camp on health, fitness and conditioning is conducted for all age groups by T.M. Thangavel, an expert from the American Council of Exercise using TRX Suspension Training and Kettle Bell.

“This will improve the participants' self-esteem, balance, agility and flexibility. This is important as it improves the fitness level. This exercise is a different kind of activity outside the gym, which helps the person to keep fit,” he added.
