Guindy National Park is getting a facelift. As part of the first phase of the project, a walkers’ path has been laid and steel barricades have been put up. Besides, a new parking slot and new play equipments are in place near the entrance of the park and enclosures are also being constructed to house more animals and birds. Recently, a couple of ostriches from Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur, were brought to the park. An enclosure has been constructed now for the Indian rock python, Russell’s viper, spectacled cobra, common sand boa, and Indian rat snake. New sheds have been installed at the enclosures for the quaker parakeet, ring-neck parakeet, bonnet macaque, common langur, according to the officials. A building for an activity centre is being constructed: here, awareness programmes, lectures and other events meant for the public will be organised. Another plan is the greening of the entire zoo.
Keeping animals cool
- To prevent animals from getting dehydrated during summer, they are fed cucumber and fruits.

- They are also given lots of water.
- Every day, water is splashed on the animals and on the sand using huge hose pipes.
- For further cooling, gunny bags are tied on the grills of the enclosures and they are watered at regular intervals.
