Over the last 21 years, 46-year-old R. Ethirajan, a resident of Saidapet, has donated blood nearly 40 times. There is no particular incident that moved this employee of Central Bank of India, Parrys, to start donating blood and propagate the idea blood donation among others. He just decided to donate blood when he was 24 and has been regularly donating since then.

“Earlier, I used to donate blood once in three months but now I give once in six months, keeping age in mind,” says Ethirajan, who is a table tennis champion of Central Bank of India. Once, he had donated blood on the day before a match. “It was Inter-Institution League Table Tennis Tournament on December 23 in 2001, organised by Chennai Table Tennis Foundation. A necessity arose and I did not hesitate to help the person,” he recalls.

Ethirajan has won many awards for being a champion blood donor. “I want many people to come forward and donate blood, especially sports persons. They should show the way,” he says. “My blood group is O-positive and I am more than willing to help anyone in need,” he adds.
