Long distance travellers boarding buses from the Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) will soon park their vehicles in a new facility. A spacious two-storey parking lot has come up at the terminus. This facility, located at the basement of the terminus, is expected to be inaugurated at the end of the month of ‘Aadi’.
According to sources in the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, which manages the terminus, the existing parking lot, opened four years ago is cramped and can accommodate only 50 cars and 2,000 bikes.
Work on the new facility started in July last year. “The new parking lot is more spacious and better illuminated, has reflectors and sign boards to help commuters park. The new facility may be opened after the end of the ‘aadi’ month,” said a CMDA official. This parking lot can accommodate more than 2,500 bikes. A separate floor has been allotted for cars. Every day, more than 10,000 commuters board buses at the terminus.With many coming to drop or pick passengers, there is huge demand for parking space. “The new parking facility will be a boon for travellers as they can park their vehicles safely at the terminus,” said Mohammed Syed, a commuter from Choolai.

With companies coming up at the rate of knots in Sriperambadur, Oragaddam, Irunkattukottai and Kancheepuram, there has been rise in the number of passengers boarding buses from CMBT. Most of them find it convenient to park their vehicles at the terminus. “South-bound travellers who work in these companies find it extremely useful to park their vehicles mainly bikes at the terminus,” said a SETC (State Express Transport Corporation) official.
