Come August 2, old students of Railway Mixed Higher Secondary School, Perambur, are going to take a trip down memory lane.
For a school with a history spanning a century, its alumni association was surprisingly formed only two years ago. Established in 1891 as a primary school for European, Anglo-Indian and Indian students, the school has been catering for wards of employees of the Indian Railways. As its strength grew, it was upgraded to a middle school in 1941 and a higher secondary school in 1978.
The students who passed out of the portals of this institution have made it big in several walks of life.

Several former students owe a lot to the school for their communication skills. “We owe our fluency in English to our teachers,” says K.R. Premanand, a student of the 1986 batch and also a committee member.
The Railway Old Students’ Association (ROSA) held its first alumni meeting in 2012. Apart from honouring Board examination toppers and teachers, the association also plans to ‘adopt’ five economically poor students. ROSA also aims at roping in more old students to connect with the school. “We have nearly 800 old students in the association and over 2,000 are on Facebook. The reunion is not just a meeting of old students but an occasion to give back to the school ,” says Neela Ganguly, secretary, ROSA.
Easter Raj, a student of the 1988 batch, expresses his wish to toll the school bell. “The bell resembles a railway track and produces an unusual sound. Whenever the peon was absent, we would rush to play his role,” he recalls.
