Melody mantra
Harris Jayaraj is thrilled with the way the songs for Maattrraan have shaped up. Says the music director: “The songs were composed on a cruise ship in Europe. I usually work best when alone, and this setting was just perfect. Interestingly, the melodies came from different countries. In fact, one of the pieces has ballet touches. Every time I travel to other countries, I pick up musical instruments. During this trip too, I picked up four uncommon instruments, and used a couple of them for the songs. I’m glad the songs have received positive response. It really helped that director K.V. Anand and the producer gave me a free hand.”

Music director Srikanth Deva is on cloud nine, with over half-a-dozen offers in hand. “I was happy to be approached by Karunas to compose music for Ragalaipuram. Since Karunas understands music himself, I was thrilled when he appreciated my work for the film. I am also working for Bhoologam, 6 and Sogusu Perundhu. My other projects include Chandamama, Machan, Thappattam and another film from the producer of Kullanari Kootam. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to prove my worth,” he says.
Sounds new
Music director D. Imman is excited about the challenges that scoring music for Prabhu Solomon’s Kumki has thrown his way. “When I first listened to the story of Kumki, all I could think of was how to reproduce the trumpeting of the elephants. I knew one instrument that could produce this well — the pipe. I so wanted to use this, and I managed to use it for the song ‘Soi Soi’. For the same song, I also roped in the music troupe ‘Samar Kalai Kuzhu’ who lent their touch of music to the song. I try to use new sounds wherever possible, and rope in new singers too,” says the music director.
