Movie: Easan

If you felt that Sasikumar's “Subramaniapuram” was dark, wait till you see “Easan”. Sasikumar stormed into film industry as an actor, director and a producer with smash hit “Subramaniapuram” and later went on to give a stunning performance in “Nadodigal”. He has also produced the national award winning film “Pasanga”. But, I am afraid he has failed to strike the right chord with the audience this time around.
Story
The film is based on Chennai's night life, which, I'd say, is a new genre for the Tamil audience. Chezhiyan (Vaibhav) is a rich spoiled guy. He and his friends freak out in the city as Vaibhav's father Deva Nayagam (A.L. Azhagappan) is a leading politician who would bail them out when they land in trouble. Vaibhav falls in love with Reshma (Aparna), whose father is a big businessman. Predictably, there is some political drama that happens before everyone agrees to their marriage.

Samudhrakani plays Sangayya, an Assistant Commissioner, who is used in the political drama and gets furious after knowing this but his hands are tied by the Commissioner of Police. The movie gains some momentum when Chezhiyan is beaten up and kidnapped by an unknown person just before the intermission.
After the interval, Sangayya solves the case and comes to know that a Std XI student (Easan) is the convict. Obviously, Easan has a flash-back sequence that explains his motive for revenge. Then, the climax reveals what happens to Easan and whether he takes his revenge or not.
What worked
The main problem with this movie is that, it never takes off at all. You will get tired of too many repetitive pub scenes in the first half. The movie's runtime is nearly three hours, making one feel that the screenplay could have been a lot brisker. Music director James Vasanthan's magic is definitely missing. There are many dark and disturbing scenes in the film too.
Bottomline: A dark film that could have been crisper.
