Ranjit Films is clearly suffering from the Ala Modalaindi hangover, so much that the banner has not risked moving out of the comedy genre and has almost replicated the climax episode of Ala Modalaindi depending on Ashish Vidyarthi and tagubothu Ramesh to provide the laughs and rounded it off with a wedding scene. But what is Madatha Kaja ? The sweet which is a Kakinada speciality has two references here, one the tone of the film is touted to be as sweet as the Kaja and the fold or the madatha suggests the hero's intelligence and his ability to outsmart people. The first few minutes of the film are really saccharine sweet, Naresh with his drooping shoulders, silly wisecracks and one-liners brings a smile, but that's about it. Naresh is an informer in the police department and because of his inputs, the area under his SI's control has a zero crime rate. The department is impressed with him, offers him a job but he rejects it.
Now comes in AP and JP played by Ahuti Prasad and Jai Prakash Reddy, two big time baddies whose criminal activities in their respective areas has been a boon for their big boss played by Ashish Vidyarthi. The rivalry and the squabbles between AP and JP has hurt the business and Ashish Vidyarthi wants the duo to rein in but even before that Kalyan (Naresh) steps in woos one of the baddie's daughter Swapna (Sneha Ullal) and unravels their mysterious business, that's one more feather in Kalyan's cap. The best part of the film is its music, it's not extraordinary but is full of life and keeps you awake through the rest of the film.
Sneha Ullal is mere eye candy, Naresh needs scripts that match his energy and funny bone and also comedians who complement him well; here he merely waits and watches the story unfold. Ahuti Prasad is on par with JP speaking the Telangana dialect and Subbu Raju is consistent in his comic act.
