Born out of an initiative by filmmaker Pa Ranjith’s Neelam Cultural Centre and Madras Records, there’s a heavy night of socially conscious, satirical and hard-hitting Tamil music in store with The Casteless Collective. Presented by city promoters Sound Awake, the band will run through material from their debut full-length album

Magizhchi , which released at the start of the year. The subject of Vice Asia’s new documentary short, The Casteless Collective draws from a traditionally Tamil form of music called Gana and fuses it with hip-hop, rock and more. Through vocalists such as Arivu, Isaivani and more, there are searing verses not only about caste oppression and exploitation, but also a celebration of their identity in the face of opposition.

Rinky Sharma, Hanita Bhambri

It’s a double EP launch night at Bflat this week, featuring two singer-songwriters from different parts of the country. New Delhi-based Hanita Bhambri, who scored a record deal with Universal Music India to release her first single ‘Be Patient’ in February, put out her new EP Nothing For Our Own in May. Bringing out a soulful, vulnerable voice with deeply personal lyrics, Bhambri will perform with her band. Hyderabad-based Rinky Sharma joins the lineup to promote her debut EP Tangled , which features songs in Hindi and English. Sharma says even though she enjoys music that’s intricate, writing relatable music is her goal. “I feel you need to have emotions that you can break it down to, to make it simple. While writing this music, I was being plain honest,” she says.

REProduce Drones

One of the country’s underground music experiences enters its 31st session at JP Nagar artiste space Walkin Studios. Artiste and event agency REProduce puts together a two-hour experience of the kind of music you probably wouldn’t hear at any regular pub or club on a weekend. This week’s lineup features sets by Bengaluru-based producer, guitarist and vocalist Sanoli Chowdhury, who is readying her new EP Behind This Hemisphere . It is mellow and melancholic guitar-based music that also incorporates electronic elements. In addition to an audio-visual set by motion graphics artist Svojas Chari aka Goji, there’s producer Rahul Das’ electronic music project Oort performing material off his upcoming EP This Revolution is Telepathic . Also the brains behind New Delhi electronic/rock band SundogProject, Oort is informed by everything from synthwave and IDM to ambient and techno.
