'Period. End of Sentence,' short film set in Indian village featuring original 'Pad Man', gets Oscar nod

India has found a tiny place in the Oscar sun this year. Rayka Zehtabchi and Melissa Berton’s Period. End of Sentence , which is among the five films nominated in the documentary (short subject), has a distinct India connect.

It has Guneet Monga and Mandakini Kakar on board as two of the executive producers and Shaan Vyas as one of the co-producers.

Then there’s the Coimbatore entrepreneur, ‘Pad Man’ Arunachalam Muruganantham , whose low cost sanitary pad-making machine sets off a revolution of sorts in Kathi Khera village, in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh.

The 26-minute film, set in the village, is about the local women, deprived of affordable pads, finding steady income and empowerment and access to feminine hygiene.

The women make and market their own brand of sanitary pads called Fly.
