Tamil film Kanavu Variyam is going places. This film will be travelling to the Shanghai International Film Festival in June, where it will have its Asian premiere. This is the movie’s sixth international honour, the biggest of them being the two ‘Remi Awards’ that it bagged at WorldFest.
Naturally, Arun Chidambaram — who has directed the film besides starring in the lead role — is elated. The sole intention behind making Kanavu Variyam , a film that primarily deals with power cuts and shortage in Tamil Nadu, was to “tell science in an engaging manner.”
“What if there was an innovative solution to the power cuts — my film deals with that,” explains Arun, “Some villages in the state have cuts for almost 18 hours… so I decided to base my script there. The problem is that when you take up such a subject, it tends to become documentary-like. But I wanted my film to be fun and commercial. After all, science is fun, and it’s shown that way in the film.”
