There was a sea of chic black gowns, sharp black suits and slogan badges at the Golden Globes this year. A look at the fashion hits and misses

The 75th Golden Globe Awards hosted three days ago was unlike any other, fashion-wise too. It was about activism and solidarity for the “Me Too” movement and the “Time’s Up” campaign. While celebrities always bring their A-game to the red carpet, dressed in the most regal colours, this year, it was a sea of chic black gowns, sharp black suits and slogan pin badges, to protest sexual harassment. And almost every star followed the cue. Here’s a round-up of the major fashion hits and misses.

Hits

Black beauty

Despite the 50 shades (or more) of black that we saw, there were some who wore it exceptionally well. Reese Witherspoon wowed in a one-shouldered, glitzy black gown that featured a dramatic train. Jessica Biel was another showstopper in a Dior number that featured layers of tulle. Millie Bobby Brown wore a silk Calvin Klein buoyant mini dress and a top-knot to complement her look. Tracee Ellis Ross championed the colour of solidarity in a Marc Jacobs gown and turban.

Pops of colour

Black and red are power colours and Mandy Moore brought this winning combo to the awards in a black Rosie Assoulin halter dress that had a cape, a red belt and also included pockets. She looked like quite the superhero. Allison Williams’ Giorgio Armani crystal-encrusted strapless dress with a flash of orange on the bodice was among the most interesting designs on the red carpet. Accessories donned brought in some colour on Sunday night. Zoe Kravitz who wore a black form fitting dress added lovely geometric emerald drop earrings that accentuated her look.

Metallic accents

Black with some shimmer is how a lot of celebrities did it. Saoirse Ronan wore a modern design by Atelier Versace that had structured shoulders, one long sleeve and glittering, silvery accents. The sides of Jessica Chastain's Armani Prive gown presented an unexpected metallic twist. Dressed in Gucci, Margot Robbie’s satin gown had gleaming 3-D floral embellishments. And Dakota Johnson’s statement crystal bow on the train of her gown was a clever and cute addition.

Dress meets pantsuit

Alison Brie’s strapless Zoulias half-dress half-pantsuit was a refreshing change. With a diamond necklace as her statement accessory, she really rocked this fashion concept. Wearing a similar outfit with a somewhat different neckline was Christina Hendricks.

 

Interesting necklines

Alicia Vikander looked gorgeous in a Louis Vuitton ensemble that featured long sleeves and easily the sweetest frilled neckline and beaded detailing down the front. The keyhole cut-out feature on the back made this a winning outfit for her. There was Emilia Clarke who wore a classy Miu Miu creation. The strapless gown had a fascinating neckline that made her diamond necklace look even more attractive. Elisabeth Moss’ ornate collar on her otherwise simple dress fetched her full marks.

Misses

Front split

We’re not quite sure what Debra Messing was thinking when she opted for a dress meets trouser look, thanks to that hideous front split along her heavily embellished cap-sleeved gown designed by Christian Siriano. With a colour as versatile as black, we’re quite certain she could have done better!

Skin show

Wonder if nobody told actress Blanca Blanco about the all-black dress code. Dressed in a flashing red, barely there ensemble that exposed more than it covered, unfortunately, she was one of the biggest fashion disasters this year.

Conflicting hemlines

We saw a fair amount of this concept on the red carpet this time around. Heidi Klum who wore an Ashi Studio design that featured a short skirt in the front and a long train at the back, didn’t look too bad, but really, there were too many feathers everywhere!

It was terribly disheartening to see television’s favourite fashion icon, Sarah Jessica Parker, go wrong with that terribly bulky dress.

Bizarre cuts

Caitriona Balfe was dressed in an undecipherable Chanel gown which failed to impress with its unanticipated silhouette that had chain detailing, feathery arm accents, and something super weird going on around her knees.

Tulle much?

We didn’t exactly mind Kendall Jenner’s foamy tulle gown by Giambattista Valli from the designer’s Fall 2017 couture collection that featured a long, dramatic train and a shorter hemline in the front. It is the amount of tulle that we had a problem with.
