Trinamool Congress chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday took strong exception to Narendra Modi’s comment that all Bangladeshis would have to pack their bags and return to their country after May 16.

Mr. Modi had also accused Ms. Banerjee of discriminating between Bengalis and those from other States residing in West Bengal, and said she was rolling out the red carpet to “Bangladeshis.”

“So what? We were together all these years,” Ms. Banerjee said.

“What is this between this country and that country…? He should not forget that we [Bengalis] are a population speaking the fifth most spoken language in the world… One should not hate someone who speaks a different language.”
