Mr. Gupta was selected as a candidate of Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha election. Earlier, he has also opted out of the race citing his father’s health conditions. His father Raj Kumar Gupta also resigned from the party citing his health problems.
In a letter to the party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Mr. Gupta said that despite his best efforts to work for the party, his was “constantly humiliated” and a senior leader of the party in the communication wing even indulged in his “character assassination”.

He has not named the leader in the letter. He mentioned about he worked to fulfil all the responsibilities the party had given him.
However, after his resignation, Gujarat Congress leaders have vocally denied his charge and called him an “agent” rather than a leader.
“It is known to everyone who Rohan Gupta is. He used to work for the BJP and has damaged the party in every election,” Gujarat Congress spokesman Manish Doshi said after Mr. Gupta’s resignation.
In Gujarat, Mr. Gupta had a meteoric rise due to his proximity to late Congress leader Ahmed Patel. “Gupta had lost Ahmedabad municipal election and yet he became a national leader,” a party leader said.
After Mr. Patel’s death in 2020, Mr. Gupta came in controversy regarding “misuse of funds” and his family’s business dealings with local business leaders. He had however denied all charges.
