IBM on Monday showcased its latest innovations aimed at helping organisations leverage their capabilities in the cloud, mobile, analytics and social technologies. These are the products of the company’s India Software Labs, India Research Labs, and India Systems Development Lab.
Stating that these are exciting times for the country in terms of technology, Kaushik Bhaskar, Vice President, India Software Labs, IBM India, said, “The digital innovations we have embarked upon can be applied to many campaigns that are currently on, like Make in India.”
He said IBM has increased the investment in research and development. Globally $19 billion was spent over the last three years that is an average of around $6 billion a year.

One of the focus areas of innovations is in the learning space wherein educational institutions can have customized solutions tailored to the learning ability of individual students thereby narrowing the gap between the teacher and the student.
Mr. Bhaskar said digitization can substantially boost efficiency cutting out paperwork, and thereby reducing the associated human error. Another area is the pharmaceutical sector, wherein people can use the smartphone to scan the barcode on medicine packets and validate the genuineness of the medicines.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
One of the products is Digital Locker, a personal storage space linked to the user’s Aadhaar number. Citizens can share the e-documents with government agencies thereby eliminating the need for hardcopies. These can be shared through registered repositories, in order to ensure their authenticity.
IBM has also developed a solution for the e-commerce segment to avoid glitches like the one faced by Flipkart during the ‘Big Billion Day’ Sale. When there is a spike in volume, the Hybrid Cloud solution scales up the backend infrastructure so that the retailer can handle the increased load.
Another innovation is in disaster management. The predictive model collates historical and real-time data to ensure that emergency workers are adequately forewarned about the location of a probable disaster like floods, and its intensity. It also provides information on not only the location of warehouses but also on the amount of relief material each of them has and how easily they can be moved to the disaster zone.
