Nokia announces job cuts at Finnish plant

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia on Monday said it planned to cut roughly 10 per cent — or 285 jobs — from its current workforce at its plant in Salo.

The Salo plant has some 2,200 employees. Nokia said it aimed to help the affected employees with various solutions, including voluntary severance packages.

The company said the move was part of revamping the plant west of the Finnish capital Helsinki and focus on “the high-value smartphone market, especially in Europe”, adding it hoped to offer faster deliveries with the changes.

Nokia is the world’s largest mobile phone maker and has production in Brazil, Britain, China, Finland, Hungary, India, Mexico, Romania, and South Korea.
