Continuing its expansion in the power sector, Hyderabad-based Lanco Infratech has finally become the largest independent power producer in the country pipping Tata Power by attaining 3,292 MW generation capacity last week. It has set a target of 15,000 MW by 2015.
The company commissioned and made operational its 600 MW unit at Lanco Anpara Power, Uttar Pradesh, reaching a total power generation capacity of 3,292 MW. Tata Power has an installed capacity of 2,977 MW at present.
The coal-based unit's total capacity is 1,200 MW (2X600). The Uttar Pradesh government has tied up the project's coal and water linkages. It has also put in place a 765 kV transmission line for power evacuation and power purchase agreement with distribution companies promoted by the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Board.

However, Tata Power's 800 MW first unit of its ultra mega power project at Mundra, Gujarat, is likely to be commissioned by September this year which could help it regain lost ground.
Lanco Infratech Executive Chairman L. Madhsudan Rao said synchronisation of the 600 MW unit -1 of Anpara power plant proves the capabilities of the company to execute tough projects with challenges.
