The country’s second largest carmaker Hyundai Motor India on Tuesday reported its highest domestic sales ever at 31,001 units, a jump of 46.13 per cent over the same month a year ago.

The company had sold 21,215 units in the domestic market in February 2009, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) said in a statement.

Domestic sales of the company is the highest since inception when HMIL launched its flagship small car Santro, it added.

The company’s total sales rose by 42.85 per cent at 54,617 units against 38,235 units in the year—ago period.

“The sales continue on a strong pitch as we have seen a lot of pre—ponement of buying because of the anticipated rise in excise duty in the union budget during the last two months,” HMIL Director (Marketing and Sales) Arvind Saxena said.

The two per cent hike in excise duty is expected to lead to a correction in demand in the short run, he added.

In the A2 segment (Santro, i10, i20 and Getz Prime), the company sold 50,515 units, while in the A3 segment (Accent and Verna) sales were at 4,051 units.

The A5 segment (Sonata Transform) of HMIL witnessed sales of 50 units, while its SUV Tucson received one buyer during the month.
