PTA users seek removal of anti-dumping duty

June 25, 2014 11:02 pm | Updated 11:02 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

PTA (purified terephthalic acid) Users Association, which represents manufacturers of polyester chips, polyester films and polyester filament yarn, has appealed to the Union Government to withdraw its recommendation for imposition of provisional anti-dumping duty on PTA imports.

In a notification dated June 19, the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recommended imposition of provisional anti-dumping duty on import of PTA from China, Korea, Thailand and European Union.

The duty varies between $19.05 and $117.09 for a tonne.

PTA imports attract 5 per cent customs duty. The polyester fibre industry is working at just 60-70 per cent capacity utilisation now because of lack of PTA supply, and the imposition of the duty will bring down capacity utilisation further. The provisional anti-dumping duty will hit over 20,000 small and medium-scale polyester fibre and product manufacturers in the country, the association said.
