Micromax on Monday unveiled two new handsets, which are the first ones from its stable that run on Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

The two devices — Canvas Win W121 and Canvas Win W092 — are powered by the latest Windows 8.1 operating system and are priced at Rs.9,500 and Rs.6,500, respectively.

Both are dual-SIM phones and will go on sale starting next month.

Micromax Chairman Sanjay Kapoor said, “With our vision to democratise technology and belief in providing consumers with choice of platforms, we are pleased to introduce a new range of Windows-based phones.”

Microsoft had earlier this year announced making use of its operating system free for devices that have a screen size smaller than 9 inches. Micromax has so far sold smartphones based on Google’s Android operating system and with today’s [Monday’s] launch becomes the first domestic original equipment maker (OEM) to launch smartphones powered by Windows 8.1 OS.

Microsoft India Chairman Bhaskar Pramanik said both the smartphones would be available not only in India but also in other emerging markets.
