Maruti Suzuki India, on Thursday, launched its new hatchback Celerio, which brings the convenience of an automatic transmission on to an entry-level vehicle.

The Celerio will be offered in four manual and two automatic transmission variants. While the manual transmission models are priced between Rs.3.5 lakh and Rs.4.96 lakh, the two auto gear shift variants are priced at Rs.4.29 lakh and Rs.4.59 lakh.

“Given the congestion on Indian roads, the demand for auto mode is no brainer. Cars with automatic transmissions at present account for less than 5 per cent of the total passenger vehicles sold in India,” MSI Managing Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said at the launch. Celerio Auto Gear Shift variants would have the flexibility of manual and auto drive mode in the same car, with a simple shift of gear lever, he added.

Maruti claims that both the versions will deliver a mileage of about 23.1 km. “Celerio will cater to a growing demand for vehicles with automatic gear shift at an affordable price,” Mr. Ayukawa said.

Maruti Suzuki India has already started taking bookings for the car.
