Samsung has people in India who are working on its new open-source mobile operating system (OS), called Tizen, which has been co-developed with Intel Corp as a potential answer to the dominance of Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS software.
While the Korean smartphone giant has rapidly become one of the world’s largest smartphone makers, largely due to the adoption of Android software, it has been looking to offer different options to customers.
The new Tizen-based smartphones are reportedly expected to be launched in the third quarter of this year.

“While I can’t give a lot of details, we do have some people here who are working on the development of this project… As you know, we have a software centre in Noida,” Manu Sharma, Director, Mobile Business, told
Mr. Sharma, however, refused to divulge details on the scheduled rollout plan.
The presence of an Indian development team for Tizen could indicate a certain level of customisation for the domestic market, and bodes well for the prospects of India as a destination for future rollouts.
