• A draft of the Indian Telecommunication Bill, 2022, was released last week for public comments, and has since then generated discussion on various changes it proposes to the current telecom regulatory framework.
  • The current draft of the Bill expands the definition of “telecommunication services” to include over-the-top (OTT) communication services, which could result in them being subject to the same licensing conditions as telecom service providers.
  • The draft Bill proposes that the identity of the person communicating shall be available to the receiver to tackle spam. Unlike now where only the phone number of the person calling is displayed, going forward the name would also be displayed.
