BharatBenz sees marginal drop in share

German truck brand BharatBenz has reported 14 per cent rise in its truck sales in the medium and heavy commercial vehicle (M&HCV) market during April-June 2015 quarter when compared with the year-ago period. However, the company has seen a marginal drop in market share on a year-on-year-basis, but it managed to maintain it when compared with the preceding quarter.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicle (DICV), the Indian arm of Daimler AG, sold about 3,000 units in April-June 2015 when compared with about 2,635 units in the year-ago period. However, June quarter sales were 17 per cent lower when compared with 3,600 units it recorded during January-March 2015 quarter.

Though its sales were up 14 per cent, the company’s market share fell to 5.6 per cent during April-June 2015 quarter from 6.1 per cent in the year-ago period. However, quarter-on-quarter basis, the market share was the same at 5.6 per cent.

The total M&HCV sales (goods carriers) in the domestic market stood at 53,332 units during Q1 of this fiscal as against 43,124 units in the year-ago period. Tata Motors continued to dominate the market a share of 53 per cent (54 per cent in the year-ago period). Ashok Leyland and VE Commercial Vehicle garnered share of 27.5 per cent (23 per cent) and 9.5 per cent (10.9 per cent), respectively.

“Recent entrants such as VECV, BharatBenz and Mahindra & Mahindra together now account for about 17 per cent of M&HCV segment in India. Overall, while competition from OEMs such as VECV and Bharat Benz is likely to get formidable, the strong brand equity of incumbents, well-established product portfolio and wide spread servicing network will make market traction for new players more gradual,’’ pointed out rating agency Icra.
