Indian culinary sector needs more trained hands, reports IFCA

The Indian Federation of Culinary Association (IFCA) on Saturday said that the culinary industry is facing a severe crunch of trained professionals and stressed on the need to get more skilled hands for better output.

“There are only 200 institutions which provide training in the culinary sector in the country and the output is only 10,000 trained professionals per annum. This would not contribute even 25 per cent of the industry requirement, Chef Soundarajan, General Secretary, IFCA, told PTI on the sidelines of the fourth National Culinary Congress 2009 here.

As many as 400 chefs from all over the country put up a great show on the inaugural day of the three-day event organised by the IFCA.

Mr. Soundarajan said the industry has been growing at 300 per cent per annum and needs trained professionals. Hence, the idea of organising such events was to attract youth towards this profession.

Sudhakar Rao, Director, Culinary Association of India said that the association would make an appeal to IFCA to increase the salary at the entry level jobs.

Andhra Pradesh Tourism minister Geetha Reddy was the guest of honour at the event.
