GE’s Immelt calls on PM; major announcement with Wipro tomorrow

Chairman of the world’s leading conglomerate GE, Jeffery Immelt, who is on a two-day visit to India, today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprised him of the company’s plans for the country.

Confirming the meeting company officials said Mr. Immelt calls on senior government officials on his visits to India and other Asian countries. However, they did not divulge the details of the discussions.

Mr. Immelt is slated to hold a joint press conference with Wipro Chairman Azim Premji on Friday as part of GE’s healthcare business and expected to make a major announcement.

GE is present in India across various sectors like technology, infrastructure, finance and consumer products and generated revenues of about $2.6 billion from the country in 2008.

The company has two Technology Centres in India - one each in Bangalore and Hyderabad - and an Innovation Centre in Hyderabad. GE India employs around 12,000 people.
