26 raiders killed

Over 26 Pakistani intruders were killed in two major encounters between the security forces and Pakistani infiltrators yesterday [August 13] at Naugam in Gurez sector, 50 miles from here [Srinagar]. An official spokesman said that 11 intruders were captured and many injured. Indian forces lost six men and some injured. Four Pakistanis surrendered. The remaining intruders fled as a result of heavy casualties inflicted in follow-up operations.

Moon pictures from Soviet probe

A Soviet space probe has taken pictures of a previously unseen part of the back of the moon and transmitted them to the earth, an official announced said to-day [August 14, Moscow]. The pictures, which are to be published next week, might be clearest moon photos made so far. They were transmitted with 1,100 lines to the picture, said the announcement distributed by Tass. This compares with 600 lines for the American Ranger photos, 200 lines of Mariner III Mars photos and 550 lines on American commercial television.

Starvation deaths in Tibet

Tibet is passing through a period of acute food scarcity resulting in starvation deaths. This was disclosed by a group of eight Tibetan refugees who crossed over into Sikkim through its northern borders recently. The Chinese are believed to have imposed severe restrictions on the movement of Tibetan population. The refugees have been brought to Gangtok for further screening and interrogation. The Chinese have also initiated a new hate campaign against the former nobles in Tibet.
