Chief Justice N.V. Ramana made this remark while hearing a plea challenging the constitutional validity of colonial sedition law.

In what may be an unprecedented judicial criticism of the way sedition is used by the government to crush liberties, the CJI questioned why a colonial law used against Mahatma Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak continues to survive in the law book after 75 years of Independence.
