Shehbaz Sharif is Pakistan’s 23rd Prime Minister. On April 11,2022 he was elected with a majority of 174 out of 342 votes.
This was after lawmakers walked out of the parliament expressing no confidence in Imran Khan’s party - the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Shehbaz Sharif is the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party. He led the Opposition’s efforts to overthrow the government and was identified as their sole PM candidate. His election as prime minister is being seen as the conclusion to a political crisis that has rocked Pakistan since early 2022.
Shehbaz Sharif is the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Along with Nawaz Sharif, he was exiled to Saudi Arabia as the result of the 1999 Pakistan military coup. They returned to Pakistan in 2007.
Shehbaz Sharif has served three times as Chief Minister of Pakistan’s largest, most influential Punjab province. This is where 60% of the country’s 220 million people live.
He entered the national political scene when he became the chief of the PML-N party in 2017. This was after Nawaz Sharif’s conviction in the Panama Papers revelations.
Shehbaz Sharif is known for his efforts to increase business and energy ties between India and Pakistan In his inaugural speech he raised the issue of repealing Article 370 in Kashmir. He said that Pakistan wants good ties with India but durable peace would not be possible until the Kashmir dispute is resolved.
