VMC election today

75 candidates in fray; movement of leaders other than candidates, agents barred

VIJAYAWADA: All arrangements have been made for the conduct of election in the 14 municipal divisions, where elections have been put off following floods, in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

Polling was completed in divisions on September 24. The remaining divisions that are going to polls are: 1, 26, 27, 29, 49, 51 to 59.

There are 75 candidates in the fray for the 14 divisions. Of the 1,39,570 voters in these divisions, 71,254 are men and 68,316 women.

The VMC authorities set up 132 polling stations and 695 election staff will be on duty to conduct the polls.

The Commissioner of the VMC visited all the divisions and supervised the arrangements.

About 1000 police personnel will guard the municipal elections.

As many as five officials of the rank of deputy superintendent of police, 12 inspectors, 36 sub-inspectors and 600 constables were put on election duty from Thursday evening.


Fifteen mobile parties, 10 striking forces and 20 shadow parties will be on polling duty. The police set up check-posts at seven points, besides identifying eight static points and 25 intersection points. Eight platoons of Armed Reserve force will be on special duty.

Except the contesting candidates and their election agents, no other leaders will be allowed to move about in the 14 divisions. There is a ban on sale of liquor in the divisions till the completion of election process.
